My name is Debra Johnson. I’m an occupational therapist and the owner of STEPS for Kids, Inc. STEPS for Kids (Sensory Therapies, Education & Play Skills) specializes in helping children and families affected by Sensory Processing Disorders and related conditions. I started the Right STEPS for Kids blog as a way to share information about the clinic, provide education about Sensory Processing Disorders, talk about issues related to SPD and related conditions, open up discussions about children, development and parenting and to provide access to resources and information that I’ve found along the way.
I have been an occupational therapist (OT) for over 21 years. My bachelors degree in OT is from the University of IL at Chicago. I also hold a Masters degree in Rehabilitation Services Administration from DePaul University in Chicago. My experience in OT ranges from pediatrics to geriatrics and includes various settings such as hospital, community re-entry, home care, skilled nursing and school based services. My areas of interest include SPD, autism, learning disabilities, neurological rehabilitation and pediatrics.
As a professional and as a parent (and now as a grandparent!) I have learned a lot about my areas of interest. I always try to relate my professional experiences to my own personal experiences and use my personal experiences to grow professionally. I think you’ll find that Right STEPS for Kids reflects that relationship and is an outgrowth of my desire and passion to educate and assist others.
